Aces On Wrong End Of 3-1 Contest At Creighton

OMAHA, Neb.—After having trouble against the block on Friday night at Drake, the University of Evansville volleyball team found its trouble facing the team again on Saturday, as the Aces (13-16, 6-11 MVC) fell at Creighton (12-15, 9-7 MVC) by a score of 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 15-25, 23-25).

The Aces found themselves outblocked at the net 17.5-10 as a team. The Bluejays also had 33 block assists compared to UE’s 12.

Junior Emily Wandersee led the attack for the Aces with 12 kills while sophomore Kaisi Nixon tabbed 10 kills with no errors to hit .385 in the loss. Both Wandersee and Nixon along with sophomore Brooke Maher collected three block assists each. Junior Julie Sylvester led the team with 24 digs.

In the first set, Creighton got off to a fast 3-0 start before the Aces got within one at 3-2 after an Ellen Sawin kill. The Bluejays opened the lead back up after scoring spurts of three to four points led them to 25-19 win.
       
After Creighton put up the first point to start the second, UE was able to build a 6-4 lead after a kill from Nixon. Creighton tied the game at 14, but the Aces were able to capitalize on Bluejay mistakes for a 3-0 run. After hitting .324 as a team with only two errors, the Aces took the second 25-20.

After the break, Creighton opened the third with a 2-0 lead. The Aces tied the contest at 2 and 4 before the Bluejays broke ahead. Creighton won the third 25-12.

With five-straight points out of the gate, the Aces were able to grab the lead with three kills from Maher and one from Sawin. Creighton then put together a 9-3 run to lead at 9-8. UE tied the set at 16 with a kill from Viera Rajcan. With Creighton up 21-19, the Aces fought back to find a 22-21 advantage going into a Creighton timeout. After the break, the Bluejays put up three-straight points to take the final outing 25-23.

The Aces return for one last regular-season game on Saturday, November 20 to host Southern Illinois at 7:00 p.m. in Carson Center. The Aces will pay tribute to seniors Ginta Gabruseva and Rachel Robinson, as the team hosts its senior night.
