Women's Golf opens season with podium finish

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Evansville women's golf team used a 13-stroke improvement on the second day to earn a third-place finish at the Alabama State Spring Kickoff on Tuesday at Lagoon Park Golf Course in Montgomery, Ala.

Evansville recorded a team score of 651 (332-319) after recording a 319 in the final round as the Purple Aces jumped from fourth to third on the final day. Host Alabama State captured the team title with a two-day total of 611 (297-314), followed by Alcorn State in second with a two-round score of 640 (326-314).
 
Final Results

The Aces were led by Madison Chaney who carded a pair of 79s for a two-day total of 158, earning Chaney a tie for fifth. The junior jumped five spots on the final day of the tournament after sitting in a tie for 10th after the first round.

A trio of Aces finished in a row as Sophia Rohleder, Minka Gill, and Giulia Mallman came in 12th, 13th, and 14th, respectively. Rohleder mirrored her opening-round 81 with an 81 on the second day to earn her a 12th-place finish. Following a first-round 84, Gill carded an 80 to jump up a spot to 13th. Mallman tied for the second-largest improvement following the first round as the senior bested her opening-round score by nine strokes with a 79 in the final round to grab a 14th-place finish.

The largest improvement from first round to final round in the tournament was owned by the Aces' Lexie Sollman, who finished 20th. The sophomore shot an 84 on Tuesday, improving her score by 10 strokes after recording a 94 on the opening day.

Evansville is next in action March 6 and 7 when the Aces compete in the Lonnie Barton Invitational at the LPGA Country Club in Daytona Beach, Fla.
