1/25/2008 3:17:07 PM

Cory Elenio is one University of Evansville senior who already knows where he would like to begin working. Elenio has been drafted in the second round of the MLS Supplemental Draft by the Columbus Crew. The native of Ann Arbor, Mich., finished his senior year at the University of Evansville with seven goals and nine assists for 23 points, ranking him third in the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring and 24th nationally in assists. For his career at the University of Evansville, Elenio finished with 18 goals and 19 assists in four years, and became the 18th leading scorer in school history. He was named to the NSCAA All-Midwest Region team and the All-Missouri Valley Conference first team in both 2006 and 2007. Elenio was also the Integra Bank Most Valuable Player at UE as a senior. He helped the Aces finish among the 10 leading scorers in the nation, and was a major reason why Evansville won as many as 10 matches in 2007 for the first time since 1999. "I really have a feeling of excitement, and I'm anxious to get started," says Elenio. "I got word that I might be drafted, but I wasn't sure it would be Columbus. That's a great opportunity for me, and I can't wait to get started." The 2008 MLS season gets underway soon. One of the MLS league's Charter Members, Columbus will open its 13th season overall on Saturday, March 29, when it plays host to Eastern Conference-rival Toronto FC. The Columbus Crew selected four players in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft, which was held via teleconference from the league headquarters in New York. A total of 51 players were selected by the league’s 14 member clubs in the four-round draft. The Crew selected goalkeeper Billy Chiles (Towson University) with the No. 6 pick, Cory Elenio at No. 20, forward Lukasz Tumicz (Rhode Island) at No. 34 and midfielder/defender Zola Short (Virginia University) with its final pick at No. 38.
