Real Men Wear Pink--See For Yourself Friday

9/24/2008 2:06:00 PM

One of the toughest bunch of guys on campus will be dressed in pink Friday night. The University of Evansville soccer team hosts Centenary College, and the Aces will don pink jerseys as part of the 'Kick It For The Cure' match at 7:00. The jerseys and many other items will be auctioned following the match, with all auction proceeds going to the Greater Evansville Susan G. Komen Foundation.

All tickets are $2. In addition to the jerseys, fans can bid on silent auction items that include soccer jerseys from the Columbus Crew, US National Team, and David Weir of Rangers FC, an autographed football from Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, autographed basketballs from the University of Connecticut, Indiana University, North Carolina State, Notre Dame and St. John's, and autographed soccer balls from Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame, St. John's and Wisconsin.

The event is close to the heart of UE soccer coach Mike Jacobs, whose mother is a six and a half year breast cancer survivor.

"I've seen how strong she has been in facing this, and it makes me feel good to be part of something that is very important to her," Jacobs says.

The game itself will provide UE the opportunity to end a two-match losing streak and improve on its 5-2-0 record. The Aces are ranked 20th nationally in scoring with 14 goals in seven matches, and sophomore forward Tom Irvin is ranked third nationally in assists with 0.86 per game (6 in 7 matches). Centenary is 2-3-0 this year. The Aces and Gents have one common opponent--Central Arkansas. Evansville beat UCA 3-0 in a tournament at Lexington, Ky. Aug. 31. Centenary also beat UCA, 2-1 at Central Arkansas Sept. 17.
