EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Sophomore
Stephanie Thompson was named one of 12 student-athletes named to the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference women's soccer scholar-athlete team, as announced by the conference office today.
This season, Thompson was both a MVC All-Tournament Team and honorable mention All-MVC selection. Starting all 20 matches, she was second on the squad in scoring with four goals, two assists, and 10 points this fall and led the team with 39 shots, 20 shots on goal, and two game-winning goals. In a must-win match with Missouri State (10/27), Thompson clinched UE a berth to the MVC Tournament for the seventh consecutive year with her game-winning overtime free kick goal. The Evansville native had the assist on the game-winning goal over Drake (10/23), marking UE’s first of three straight shutout victories. In addition, Thompson’s corner kick in the MVC tournament quarterfinal match led to the game-winning goal and advanced UE to the semifinals.
Academically, the exercise science major owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average and was named to the UE Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll.
A total of 44 student-athletes were nominated for the Valley’s scholar-athlete team. The criteria for the honor parallels the CoSIDA standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative gpa (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or the State Farm MVC Championship. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. Sports Information Directors at MVC institutions voted for the team.
