Chybowski, Schwerin Earn MVC Honors

4/28/2011 7:00:00 PM

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- University of Evansville senior Kate Chybowski has been chosen for the third time in her career as a first team selection on the Missouri Valley Conference All-Select Women's Tennis Team.  Chybowski was also chosen for the third time as a member of the MVC Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete Team. Joining her on the 10-player scholar-athlete squad is teammate Ashton Schwerin.

The all-conference and scholar-athlete announcements were made tonight at the MVC Tennis Tournament Banquet.  Both the women's and men's tournaments begin Friday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis's Forest Park.

Chybowski is Evansville's all-time leader with 107 singles victories and 188 total victories, breaking records that were set in 1999 by Karen Black.  She is second in school history with 81 doubles victories, five behind record holder Beth Peyton. Chybowski is 17-2 this spring at number one singles, including 6-1 against Missouri Valley Conference opponents.
Academically, Chybowski has been just as successful.  She has a 3.90 grade point average, and will graduate May 7 with a degree in Biology.  She has been accepted into the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine.

Schwerin, also a senior, has a 3.69 GPA and will also graduate next week with a degree in Biology. She missed nearly half the spring season with an injury, but came back last week to win two doubles matches and one singles match.  She has a 5-5 singles record, spread among matches at #2, 3 and 4 singles.  She is 3-5 in doubles, teaming up with five different doubles partners this spring.

Coach Nick Mueller's Aces tied for third in the MVC standings and are the number four seed in this weekend's tournament.  Both rankings are the best for Evansville since joining the MVC in 1995.  UE plays its first match Friday morning at 9:00 against fifth seed Southern Illinois, a team the Aces beat 6-1 on March 31.  The winner advances to Saturday's semifinals, most likely against number one seed Wichita State.
