EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Trentt Copeland of the University of Evansville baseball team has been named the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, announced by Commissioner Doug Elgin Wednesday. Copeland was honored for his performance during the period of April 25–May 1.
Copeland led Evansville to two wins over Missouri State, batting .750 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and .750 on-base percentage. Copeland went 3-for-4 in both victories with two singles and a double in each contest. In UE’s 3-1 win, the junior sparked both of the Ace’s rallies in the fourth and sixth innings with a single, double, and run scored. In game two, the Guelph, Ontario native recorded an RBI and two runs scored and tallied his 16th double of the season.
Playing second base, Copeland turned the game-ending double play, his 24th of the season, that preserved the, 5-4, win as the Bears threatened with bases loaded and one out in the one-run game.
Copeland is hitting .359 on the season and leads the conference with a .513 batting average against MVC opponents. A marketing major, Copeland also excels in the classroom with a 3.69 cumulative GPA.
Now in its 12th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
