ST. LOUIS -- Kelby Jenkins of the University of Evansville and Brian Dixon of Southern Illinois University Carbondale have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week. Jenkins and Dixon were honored for their performance during the period of September 24-30.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A member of the Evansville women’s cross country team, Jenkins, a junior from Frankfort, Indiana, finished third of 337 runners at the Greater Louisville Classic in Kentucky on Saturday, September 29.
Jenkins, who has a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, established a personal-best time in the 5K race, crossing the line in 17:54.
A member of the Southern Illinois men’s cross country team, Dixon, a junior from Springfield, Illinois, captured sixth individually at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday, September 29, powering SIUC to a second-place finish among the 42-team field.
A two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week selection, Dixon, who has a 3.955 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, finished the 8K race in a time of 24:49 for his second-consecutive, top-five finish.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
