Aces Host Marshall for “Kick for the Cure” Match

10/5/2012 10:39:00 AM

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville men’s soccer team will look to extending its winning streak to three games Saturday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium, when it hosts non-conference foe Marshall at 7 p.m.  In addition, the Purple Aces will be hosting a “Kick for the Cure” event during the match to benefit breast cancer research.

The Aces (6-3-0) enter Saturday’s contest having won their last two matches, posting shutout victories over Oral Roberts and Eastern Illinois.  UE ended a three-game skid by besting the Golden Eagles, 4-0, last Saturday on its home pitch, prior to topping the Panthers, 3-0, in Charleston, Ill., Tuesday afternoon.  Faik Hajderovic, the reigning MVC Offensively Player of the Week, scored the first two goals for Evansville in its win over ORU and added another goal and an assist in the victory over EIU.  Mark Anthony Gonzalez netted the final two goals against Oral Roberts, while Dylan Terry and Joel Craig each scored against Eastern Illinois.

Hajderovic leads the Aces offensively with 13 points on four goals and five assists, while Gonzalez, Terry and Jesse Sharp are tied for second on the squad with six points each.  Five other players have recorded multiple points on the season.  In goal, Eric Teppen has played all but 17:10 between the posts for UE, tallying 41 saves.  The sophomore keeper owns a 1.46 goals against average and has recorded a pair of shutouts on the year.

Marshall (8-1-1) started its season by going unbeaten in its first eight matches, before falling to Tulsa, 2-0, in its second Conference USA match on Sept. 29.  The Thundering Herd responded with a 7-0 thrashing of Asbury Wednesday afternoon, a game in which six MU players found the back of the net and goalkeeper Daniel Withrow tied a Marshall single-season record with his seventh shutout.  Prior to its loss at Tulsa, the Thundering Herd had run off seven-straight victories.

As a team, Marshall has outscored its opponents 23-3 and posted eight shutouts.  Of its 23 goals, MU has scored 16 of them in the first half and has allowed just one goal in the second half this season.  Individually, Tom Jackson leads the Thundering Herd with 15 points on six goals and three assists.  Jack Hopkins and Eddy Prugh are tied for second on the squad with eight points.  Withrow has played all but 19:16 between the posts for Marshall and boasts a 0.30 goals against average with 40 saves and a .930 save percentage.

For the game, the Aces will be sporting pink jerseys and breast cancer survivors will be recognized at half time.  Silent and Chinese auctions will also be conducted with all of the proceeds going to the Greater Evansville Susan G. Komen Foundation.  Auction items included autographed sports items, game-worn jerseys, signed Major League Soccer jerseys and a framed jersey signed by US Women’s Soccer National Team legend Brandi Chastain.
