DALLAS – The hosting Dallas Baptist University Patriots jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and continued to expand the margin throughout the evening, as the University of Evansville baseball team fell, 10-4, in eight innings Friday night in a game that was cut short due to lightning strikes in the area.
With the loss, Evansville drops to 27-19 on the season, while DBU improves to 32-14.
Totaling seven hits as a team, freshman
Kyle Pollock (2-for-4) and junior
Chris Pearson (2-for-3) each recorded two to lead the Aces.
Sophomore
Cole Isom (2-6) took the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, nine hits, two walks, while striking out one in four innings.
James Kohler,
Peter Spear, and
Tyler Miller shared the work the rest of the way.
In the first inning, DBU strung together four hits, including three doubles, to take a quick 4-0 head start.
The Patriots added an unearned run in the third before exploding for four more runs in the fourth, capped by a two-run home run by Joel Hutter, for a 9-0 lead.
With two outs in the fifth,
Eric Stamets put the Aces on the board as he doubled to left field, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Patriots crossed the plate one more time in the sixth, before Evansville battled back with three runs in the top of the eighth. Pollock and freshman
Kevin Kaczmarski belted back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the frame, marking Pollock’s third of the season and Kaczmarski’s first in his career. Walking the bases loaded with one out, Stamets was hit by a pitch, bringing in junior
Jason Hockemeyer from third. However, the Patriots were able to get out of the bases loaded jam without further damage.
Heading into the bottom of the eighth, lightning forced a 40 minute delay before the game was called with a final score of 10-4.
Taylor Massey (7-4) earned the win, allowing one run, five hits, three walks, while striking out seven in seven innings.
The three-game series continues Saturday with a doubleheader that will begin at 2:00 p.m. CT.
