9/18/2013 12:09:00 PM

ST. LOUIS – UE men's soccer player Kevin Schafer of the University of Evansville and Aryn Newsom of Illinois State University have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Schafer and Newsom were honored for their performances during the period of September 9-15.

Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

Kevin Schafer played a big role in both of Evansville's wins this week, as he was part of a back line that allowed just two goals in two matches against No. 6 Saint Louis and Georgia State. In Wednesday's upset of the Billikens, Schafer was credited with an assist on the game-tying goal when he played a long pass over the top of the SLU defense that was put into the back of the net by Jared Robinson. Schafer holds a 3.86 grade-point average in Mechanical Engineering.'

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
