Aces earn 2-1 victory at Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – It was another late victory for the University of Evansville men's soccer team on Saturday evening as Ian McGrath fired home an 86th-minute match-winner to secure a 2-1 decision for the Purple Aces over Missouri State and Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.

The win, which was the first for an opposing team in Springfield since 2014, saw the Aces improve to 9-7-2 overall and 4-2-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play. MSU, on the other hand, dropped to 8-6-2 and 3-3-1, respectively.

"You have to give a lot of credit to Missouri State because it was a battle today," UE head coach Marshall Ray said. "We didn't start the match out well, and I think it really could have gone either way in the second half. We've been in a few games like that this year, and the guys found a way to get it done once again."

An early goal put the Aces behind early as MSU's Emmerich Hoegg capitalized on a scrum in the 18-yard-box in the ninth minute.

UE would have a number of chances as the half went on, and it would be Zac Blaydes who leveled the affair. The sophomore out of Kentucky controlled the ball just outside the 18 on the right side before squeezing it inside the far post in the 30th minute.

Each side continued to build chances in the second half, with UE goalkeeper Frederik Reimer being called into action three times to make a save.

On the opposite end of the field, UE seemed to be finding opportunities through the air, and that's how the game was ultimately decided after a foul was drawn out wide. Blaydes stepped up to take the free kick and found a crashing McGrath with just over four minutes remaining in the contest.

The goal was nearly identical to McGrath's winning strike at Drake a week ago, and it marked his ninth of the season.

The Aces, who now trail league-leading Loyola by just one game in the MVC standings, will close out the regular season next week when SIUE pays a visit to Arad McCutchan Stadium.

NOTES: UE is 10-17-2 all-time against the Bears … Prior to Saturday, UE's last win in the series was a 2-0 decision in Springfield on Oct. 10, 2012 … UE is 34-31-8 all-time in matches against opponents from the state of Missouri … Since 1979, the Aces are 7-5-1 on Oct. 29, which includes a 2-1 win over then-No. 7 Creighton in 2004.
