Swimming and Diving earn pair of wins at Eastern Illinois

Charleston, Ill. -- The Purple Aces swimming and diving teams started off their weekend on a successful note with two wins against Eastern Illinois.
 
The final score for the women's team was 145 points with Eastern Illinois at 59. The men scored 115 points to the Panthers 90.
 
"Great meet. I am excited with wins," said head coach Rickey Perkins. "However, I am more excited with the way we performed. A lot of the skills we worked on this week were executed very well. We are looking forward to tomorrow's meet. Hopefully we will be better than than we were today."

Junior Danielle Freeman continued her winning streak by taking the 200 freestyle by over four seconds at 1:57.22. Teammates Ashton Adams and Jessi Hildebrand followed in third and fifth with 2:02.30 and 2:03.70 respectively. Freeman also won the 100 freestyle with a 52.89. Sophomore Kristen Myers touched in at second with 55.33.
 
Myers took her own event in the 100 IM with the top time of 1:02.57. Freshman Alaina Sylvester took a quick second place with 1:03.16, and senior Taylor Davidson completed the event sweep with a 1:04.01
 
Senior Michaela Kent played a large part in the Aces' victory as well. She took top honors in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at a 24.34. Sophomore Kaylee Gubricky followed suit with a 25.28, and freshman Emma Hennessy took third for another sweep and a time of 25.57.
 
Freshman Kristy Kupfer claimed the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:53.19; teammate Madi Jones took a close second at 10:56.36. Jones moved on to clock in the 500 freestyle at 5:20.91 for the win, with Adams touching in for third at 5:23.09. Sylvester and junior Kayla Aitken took first and second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:07.96 and 1:10.17 respectively.
 
The women took top honors in both relays as well. Sam Gowdy, Sylvester, Hennessy, and Kent won with a final time of 1:49.62 in the 200 Medley Relay. Freeman, Kent, Gowdy, and Myers took a decisive victory in the 200 Freestyle Relay with 1:39.54.
 
The men performed equally well. Freshman Brandt Hudson started the evening off with a win in the 1000 freestyle, clocking in at 10:00.06. Senior Andrew Cotton touched in at 10:23.22 for second place. Hudson also took the 500 freestyle with a 4:51.20, well ahead of the competition. Blake Wheeler took second with 5:01.99, and Cotton followed right behind at 5:04.94 for a sweep in the event. Wheeler scored his own win with a 1:45.52 in the 200 freestyle.
 
Sophomore Matt Duke took first place in the 50 freestyle with a 22.04. Senior Everett Plocek took a close second at 22.33. Another event sweep came in the 100 butterfly. Junior Prescott Marcy took the top spot with 53.86. Freshman Paul Cozzens took second with 54.13, with sophomore Andrew Schroeder following with a time of 54.38.
 
Sophomore Jared Sutphin took top honors in the 100 freestyle with a final time of 48.20. The men's 200 medley relay of Dan O'Brien, Plocek, Duke, and Sutphin took second place with 1:36.78. The 200 freestyle relay ended the night with a final second place. Wheeler, Hudson, O'Brien, and Marcy clocked in a final time of 1:28.05.
 
The Aces return Saturday at 12 p.m. CST at Indiana State.
