Ian McGrath enjoyed a breakout season for the University of Evansville men's soccer team this past fall, and he earned yet another honor on Friday as the junior midfielder was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Second Team.
"Ian epitomizes what's best about student-athletes at UE," head coach Marshall Ray said. "His drive to improve and compete on the field is matched by his efforts in the classroom. There is a reason he's wearing the captain's armband and leading our program. We are very proud of Ian and the team, and we know there is more to come in 2017."
Â
McGrath, the first double-digit goal-scorer for the Purple Aces in over a decade, found the back of the net 11 times over the course of the season to help lead the team to the second-largest single-season improvement in school history. UE ended the year with a 10-8-3 record and in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
Â
This now marks the fifth individual honor that the New Lenox, Ill., native has taken home this season. After earning an All-MVC first team nod at the conclusion of the regular season, McGrath went on to claim all-tournament honors shortly thereafter. Since the season has concluded, he's also been named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team as well as the NSCAA All-West Region team.
Â
An exercise science major, McGrath was one of two players from the MVC to earn Scholar All-America honors as he was joined on the second team by Loyola goalkeeper Andrew Chekadanov. McGrath is one of four honorees from Indiana schools, joining Notre Dame's Brandon Aubrey, Butler's David Goldsmith and Indiana's Grant Lillard.
