Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

McGrath double not enough against No. 16 Utah Valley

PEORIA, Ill. – Ian McGrath found the back of the net twice on Friday afternoon, but his career day at Shea Stadium was ultimately for naught as the University of Evansville men's soccer team fell 4-2 to 16th-ranked Utah Valley in the opening game of the Hotels at Grand Prairie Soccer Series on the campus of Bradley University.

With the loss, UE fell to 1-2-0 on the year and will conclude play in Peoria later this weekend with a Sunday showdown against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Utah Valley, which moved to 2-0-0, wasted little time in getting things started as Skyler Milne netted the opener just 66 seconds after kickoff to spot the Wolverines the early lead.

McGrath would counter with the equalizer in the 17th minute, converting off a feed from Ryan Koenig, but the deadlock was short-lived as Milne put UVU back on top less than two minutes later, which is how the game would stay until the second half.

"We struggled a little bit after giving up that early goal, but I'm really proud of how we responded," UE head coach Marshall Ray said. "We were a little unfortunate to fall behind again on a set piece, but we never gave up. The team was dangerous the whole second half and competed as long as they could. I'm happy with the way we competed against a team as good as UVU, but we still have work to do."

In the second 45 minutes, it would be UVU's Paul Hoffmeister who'd complete a brace as he bookended McGrath's second score with his third and fourth goals of the season.

Kickoff on Sunday against FDU is slated for noon.

NOTES: This weekend marks the first-ever meetings between UE, Utah Valley and Fairleigh Dickinson … The Aces had never previously faced an opponent from the state of Utah … UE is 2-1-0 against New Jersey, picking up wins over NJIT and Seton Hall … Ian McGrath is the first Aces player two find the back of the net twice in a game since former player Desmond Dolphy did so twice against Northern Kentucky last season … Former standout Mark Anthony Gonzalez was the only other player to net a brace last season.
