Records fall for swimming and diving as House of Champions concludes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Swimming and diving competed in the annual House of Champions meet this weekend in prime mid-season form.
 
The men scored a total of 576 points for 7th place overall, while the women took 5th with 703.
 
"We used this weekend to show the progress of our training for the first half of the season," said head coach Rickey Perkins. "We are well ahead of where we were last year at this time. It was a great meet. I am very happy with the information we got from this weekend. I am very proud of this team."
 
FRIDAY:
 
Credence Pattinson led the way for the Aces with a strong start to his weekend. The freshman clocked in a 4:35.58 in the 500 freestyle in Friday's consolation final for a new school record. His time overtakes A. Nicholson's seventeen-year-old record of 4:35.72. Pattinson's time was good for 12th place.
 
Sophomore Brandt Hudson also competed in the consolation along with freshman Austin Smith. Hudson took 13th with a final time of 4:36.71, while Smith clocked in a 4:40.70 for 15th.
 
Sophomore Paul Cozzens came next with the 200 IM. He touched in at 1:53.82 for 22nd place.
 
Junior Matt Duke represented the Aces in the 50 freestyle consolation final. He placed 10th with a final time of 21.11.
 
Senior Danielle Freeman led the way for the women Friday evening. She took the top spot in the 50 freestyle with a 22.98, two-tenths of a second faster than the 2nd place finisher.
 
Freshman Emily Lane and sophomore Ashton Adams represented the women tonight in the 500 freestyle. They clocked in at 5:11.81 and 5:14.92 for 19th and 22nd places respectively.
 
Freshman Andrea Ramis was the sole representative in the 200 IM this evening. She earned 21st with a final time of 2:10.13.
 
Many other swimmers saw best times drop in the morning's preliminary round.
 
Freshman Pierce Lively and junior Keystone Marcy saw their 200 IM times improve to 2:02.52 and 2:06.00 respectively. Freshman Eli James clocked in a best 21.61 in the 50 freestyle, as did sophomore Emma Hennessy with a 23.97.
 
SATURDAY:
 
Cozzens returned to Saturday night's consolation final for the 400 IM. He took 2nd in the heat with a 4:03.63 to place 10th overall.
 
In the 200 freestyle consolation final, Austin Smith clocked in a 1:42.95 for 15th place, followed by teammate Pete Lingo, who earned 19th place with 1:42.62 in the C-Final.
 
Freshman Eli James was up next in the 100 breaststroke. He came in 18th place with a 58.21, a personal best time.
 
Following his record breaking performance Friday night, Pattinson returned to the pool in the A-Final of the 100 backstroke. The freshman managed to touch in for 3rd place with a 49.20. Hudson followed suit for 10th with a 50.77, a half second improvement from his preliminary time.
 
Several women made their way back to the final round Saturday night as well.
 
Junior Kristen Myers earned a spot in the A-Final of the 100 butterfly. She dropped two tenths of a second from her morning time to clock in a final 56.55 for 6th place. Senior Kasey Rein came back to the consolation final to earn 16th place and a 58.05. Freshman Kara Steward and Emma Hennessy rounded out the event by placing 17th and 23rd with 56.91 and 58.79 respectively. In the morning's preliminary, senior Kasey Rein earned a lifetime best 57.80.
 
Sophomores Ashton Adams and Shaina Weisberg participated in the C-Final of the 400 IM. Adams led the heat with the 17th place 4:41.20, while Weisberg earned 21st with 4:47.16.
 
Danielle Freeman swam in the 200 freestyle A-Final, taking 4th place with a 1:51.43. Teammates Andrea Ramis and sophomore Kristy Kupfer took 20th and 21st within a mere tenth of a second of each other at 1:55.47 and 1:55.57 respectively.
 
Sophomore Alaina Sylvester was the sole representative for Evansville in the 100 breaststroke, participating in the consolation final. She place 13th, clocking in at 1:06.80.
 
Finishing out the night for the women were the juniors of the 100 backstroke. Sam Gowdy returned for the A-Final, dropping two tenths from her morning time for a 5th place 57.05. Myers followed with a 58.74 20th place.
 
On the diving side, senior Cory Barnes scored 272.15 on 1-Meter in the final round, earning 5th place. He was followed closely by teammate Miguel Marcano, who took 6th with 270.25.
 
Senior Courtney Coverdale scored 244.30 on 3-Meter, landing her in 4th place.
 
SUNDAY:
 
In the final session of the meet, Brandt Hudson returned for the 200 backstroke A-Final. He dropped half a second from his preliminary time for a 7th place earning 1:50.73. Credence Pattinson followed with his time of 1:49.05, nearly a 4 second drop, for 9th place.
 
Juniors Matt Duke and Jared Sutphin competed in the 100 freestyle. Duke took 20th with a time of 47.15, and Sutphin clocked in a 47.56 for 23rd.
 
Eli James made it to the C-Final 200 breaststroke with a season best 2:09,01 preliminary time. He ended up with a 21st place finish, registering a 2:09.99
 
In the consolation final of the 200 butterfly, Paul Cozzens took 12th place with a 1:54.28 finish. He was followed by Pete Lingo in 23rd place with 1:56.09.
 
The women showed their own brand of success Sunday night as well.
 
Freshman Emily Lane led the Aces in the 1650 freestyle. She clocked in a 17:58.12 for 12th place, while Ashton Adams followed in 17th with 18:15.77.
 
Sam Gowdy returned to her second A-Final of the weekend in the 200 backstroke. She earned 8th place with a 2:04.05. Teammates Kristy Kupfer and freshman Kasey O'Rourke brought up the rear in the C-Final with 17th and 21st at 2:05.93 and 2:09.18.
 
The highlight of the evening for the women came from Danielle Freeman with her victory in the 100 freestyle. Her time of 50.17 broke the meet record of 50.94, set by Freeman herself in 2016. Emma Hennessy places 24th in the event with a time of 53.56.
 
Alaina Sylvester represented the Aces in the consolation final of the 200 breastroke. She placed 2nd in the heat with a 2:25.02, taking 10th overall, while teammate Shaina Weisberg picked up 22nd place with a 2:31.25.
 
Freshman Kara Steward competed in her first A-Final of the weekend in the 200 butterfly. She dropped nearly 2 seconds from her preliminary performance for a 5th place earning 2:05.07. Also in the A-Final was Kristen Myers, with a 2:05.56 7th place. Senior Kasey Rein put up a 2:12.27 for 21st place.
 
Miguel Marcano and Cory Barnes returned for men's diving, moving up in the ranks from the previous day's 1-Meter scored. Marcano managed a 3rd place score of 295.00, while Barnes kept close in 4th with 257.05.
 
Courtney Coverdale showed her own improvement as well, taking 3rd place with a final score of 270.20.
 
The Aces will return for their final meet of the calendar year on December 1st as they travel to take on the Missouri State Bears.
