EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Every year the swimming and diving team cuts their winter break short to travel south with the sole purpose to improve themselves. The training sessions of this trip are often the most difficult of the season.
However, such a journey doesn't come cheap; travel, food, and lodging are all required expenses for each athlete, and often reaches a hefty price tag.
Former Aces swimmer Ady Sekely Shea '10 and her husband Brian have pledged $500 per year for ten years toward the training trip expenses of one Evansville swimmer or diver in the Ady Shea Award of Excellence in Swimming and Diving.
"This award is all about giving back to the program that changed my life," said Shea. "I came over to UE as an international student thanks to Coach Perkins. My husband and I are so thankful for UE so we decided to give back. The swim team was my family away from home for 4 years so we decided the award will be the most needed and appropriate there. We are glad we are able to help a fellow athlete, and thrilled to continue doing so for the years to come."
The athlete chosen each year will be based on criteria of academic excellence, community service, and a short essay submission. This year's recipient is senior swimmer, diver, and captain Kasey Rein.
"This gift from Ady and her husband Brian is just amazing," said head coach Rickey Perkins. "It shows people want to give back, and I'm so happy for them giving back to the program and helping those less fortunate and who have a hard time paying for this trip, to enjoy it and the training atmosphere we have down there."
The Aces will depart on their annual training trip on December 27
th, this year traveling to Sebastian, FL.
