AUBURN, Ala. –
Newcomer Brittany Hay batted .400 on the day as the University of Evansville softball team opened up its 2017 season on Friday at the Plainsman Invite hosted by Auburn University.

The Purple Aces (0-2) opened up the day with a 3-1 loss to Mercer and fell in the nightcap against SIU Edwardsville by a final of 6-1.

"It was great go get outside and compete; obviously we have some things to work on and that is expected early," Aces head coach Mat Mundell said.  "Right now our biggest focus has to be on not beating ourselves and making adjustments.  The positive thing is that I know this team can do it!"

Hay picked up a hit in each game on the day and was the difference-maker in the opener against the Bears (4-2).  In her first inning of work at UE, she was hit by a pitch and stole second.  She would later score on an error by the Mercer third baseman.

Mercer tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning when Taylor Miller cross the plate following a UE error.  Later, the Bears saw the winning runs score off the bat of Danielle Castleberry.  With two outs, Castleberry notched the game-winning single.  In the circle for the Bears, Stella Preston fanned 11 UE batters as she went the distance to pick up the win.

Aces starter Morgan Florey also had a great outing, striking out 8 batters in six innings of action.  UE notched two hits in the contests and left three runners stranded.

SIU Edwardsville (6-2) struck first in the evening game, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the third. Zoe Schafer and Allison Smiley each had RBI knocks to put the Cougars on the board against Aces starter Emily Lockhart.

The Cougars added another run in the 5th before Evansville got on the board.  Michal Luckett led the inning off with a hit before moving to second on an SIUE error.  Tess Hupe sent a 1-out single up the middle to score Luckett.  Reagan Curtis got the run back for SIUE in the 6th and they added two more in the seventh to finish off a 6-1 triumph.

Six SIUE runs scored on nine hits in the game as Lockhart took the loss for Evansville.  Haley Chambers threw a complete game for SIU Edwardsville, giving up six UE hits.  Hupe had the RBI in the contest for the Aces while Luckett scored the run.

Tomorrow, UE will look for its first win as it faces Creighton at 1 p.m. and Auburn at 3:30 p.m. on the SEC Network +.
