EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Swimming and diving are on the road to Carbondale Saturday for the final regular season competition of 2016-2017.
The duel with the Salukis is set to begin at 11 a.m. CST at Shea Natatorium.
The Aces last outing was split this past weekend. The women took on the Redbirds at Illinois State on Friday, while the men traveled to Ball State on Saturday. Both teams put up strong fights, but came away with a pair of losses.
Pacing the Laces for the meet was junior Danielle Freeman. She began her evening with a win in the 50 in a 24.11. The thrill of the evening, however, came in the form of the 100 freestyle. Freeman teamed up with senior Michaela Kent and sophomore Madi Jones to take the sweep with times of 52.70, 53.61, and 53.99 respectively. Kent would go on to take second place in the 100 backstroke with a 58.07.
Sophomore Kristen Myers put up impressive numbers as well. She won the 200 butterfly handily with a final posting of 2:07.69. She garnered another victory in the 100 butterfly in a 57.78. Teammate freshman Emma Hennessy followed at a 59.86 to take the second place position.
Freshman Aine Scholand showed consistency in her events; she earned second place in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle. Her 1000 time of 10:38.78 was a mere .04 seconds behind the winning time.
The Aces took one final victory in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:37.98. Kent, Jones, Hennessy, and Freeman teamed up to defeat the Redbird A-Relay by a second and a half.
7-time MVC Diver of the Week Courtney Coverdale took to the boards in her usual fashion. Her score of 242.25 on 3-Meter took the win. Freshman Alyssa Vonder Haar took fifth place with 167.77. Coverdale earned 239.47 points on 1-Meter for another first place finish, while Vonder Haar took 5
th at 174.97 points and junior Kasey Rein took 6
th with 168.97.
Freshman Brandt Hudson began the individual events with a win for the Aces. He clocked in at a 9:59.33 in the 1000 freestyle, a season best. Hudson then continued to win the 500 freestyle by over ten seconds at a 4:48.68. Sophomore Blake Wheeler touched in at 5:01.59 for third place.
Freshman Paul Cozzens played his part in scoring points for the Aces as well. He took the victory in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.35. Cozzens fought hard in the 200 butterfly, but was outtouched by Ball State's Tanner Barton. Cozzens second place finish finalized at 1:56.57.
Sophomore Jared Sutphin took second place in the 100 freestyle with a 48.68. The men took a handful of third place finishes as well; freshman Zach Sagan at 1:48.25 in the 200 freestyle, Matt Duke's 21.99 in the 50 freestyle, and Dan O'Brien's 2:01.50 in the 200 backstroke.
Both Evansville relays took third place as well. The 200 Medley Relay team of O'Brien, sophomore Derek Stauder, senior Matt Childress, and Duke clocked in at 1:38.92. Sutphin, Hudson, O'Brien, and Childress teamed up for the 200 Freestyle Relay to touch in at 1:29.01.
Men's diver Miguel Marcano had a successful afternoon. His score of 233.93 in the 1-Meter earned him first place. He continued his winning streak with a 3-Meter score of 224.70.
