Aces return home for Western Michigan

3/16/2017 4:15:00 PM

EVANSVILLE — After picking up the first series victory of the season last weekend at Campbell, the University of Evansville baseball team will make its return home to Charles H. Braun Stadium this weekend with a three-game set against Western Michigan.

Evansville vs. Western Michigan Weekend Schedule (WMU Website)
Friday, 6 p.m.:  Live Stats  |  91.5 WUEV
Saturday, 2 p.m.:  Live Stats  |  91.5 WUEV
Sunday, 1 p.m.:  Live Stats  |  91.5 WUEV

The Aces (6-9) will be hoping to keep up their recent hot streak that has seen the team come away with five wins over the past seven contests. The biggest factor in getting UE back in the win column has been its ability to stem scoring opportunities for opponents. After committing 20 errors and posting a 7.66 earned run average over the opening eight contests, the Aces posted a 3.53 ERA with a .977 fielding percentage over the past seven.

Patrick Schnieders, a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week already this season, will get the nod on Friday. The senior right-hander is 2-1 this season with a 1.99 ERA and 32 strikeouts in just 22.2 innings of work. Meanwhile, Austin Allinger, who picked up two wins last week, and Justin Hayden will start on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, the freshman duo of Craig Shepherd and Kenton Crews have led the way at the plate, posting .409 and .381 averages, respectively. Preseason All-American Trey Hair has also been a primary power source with a .333 average to go along with team-leading totals in scores (12) and runs batted in (15).

WMU has also impressed as of late with wins in six of their last eight official games. The Broncos are coming off a busy week in Port Charlotte, Fla. After opening play with a 12-8 11-inning loss to Georgetown and a 9-1 setback to a Detroit Tigers prospect team, WMU bounced back to outscore Northeastern and Villanova 25-13 in a pair of victories.

Seven different players are hitting better than .300 at the plate, led by Tanner Allison's .436 mark with six doubles and five homers. He also leads the team in runs and RBI with 14 and 22.

First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
