EVANSVILLE — A five-run third inning put the University of Evansville baseball team behind on Tuesday night and the Purple Aces were unable to recover, ultimately falling 12-4 to visiting UT Martin at Charles H. Braun Stadium.
UE (7-12), which pushed across a pair of runs in the opening frame, followed up the five-run fifth by surrendering seven more over the next two innings before getting back on the board with a Jimmy Day two-run single in the seventh.
Tanner Wessling led the way for UT Martin (8-10) with a 3-for-6 showing at the plate with three scores and four runs batted in, and Anthony Anducci also plated four on the way to ending 2-for-4. As a team, the Skyhawks out-hit the Aces 12-8.
UE was led by Kenton Crews' 3-for-5 day, and sophomore southpaw Alex Weigand (1-2) was dealt the loss after giving up nine runs (seven earned) over the first 3.2 innings.
Nathan Corner closed out strong for the Aces, however, giving up just two hits and striking out a pair over the final four frames.
The Aces will return to action on Wednesday with a trip to SIUE. First pitch from Simmons Baseball Complex is slated for 3 p.m.
