Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb's Brady Puckett enjoyed one of his best outings of the season, and he was able to silence the University of Evansville baseball team's offense in big moments as the Purple Aces fell 4-1 to the Bisons at Ken Dugan Field.
Puckett, who tossed a complete game, allowed just six hits and struck out eight in the contest to improve to 3-2 on the season.
With the loss, the Aces dropped to 7-14 overall while LU improved to 13-8.
Patrick Schnieders earned the start for the Aces, and aside from a two-run second inning, the senior right-hander was impressive, scattering eight hits and striking out three over six innings of work. With the loss, he drops to 2-3 on the year.
"Patrick has been outstanding all season," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "It was a quality start, and getting him through six innings was crucial for us. Unfortunately, we weren't able to capitalize on our opportunities, and it's tough to see him get the loss. On Friday night against great pitching, you have to get the big hit and take advantage of the chances that you get."
Zeke Dodson fired the game's opening salvo in the second inning with a blast over the left field fence, and a Hunter Hanks single doubled the advantage later in the frame before Schnieders was able to get a ground ball as the Aces turned a double play to get out of a bases loaded jam.
UE would put the tying run in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Puckett was able to end the threat each time to keep things level at 2-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, Dodson and Jake Perry hit back-to-back homers off Ryan Brady to extend the lead to 4-0, and the Aces would plate a consolation run on a Stewart Nelson single in the ninth.
Dodson led all hitters in the game with a 4-for-4 day, and Perry was 3-for-4 with a pair of scores. Meanwhile, Kenton Crews was the only Ace with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.
UE will return to action on Saturday with the second game of the series. Due to expected inclement weather, first pitch has been moved up to 11 a.m. at Dugan Field.
