BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In their final match before starting Missouri Valley Conference play on Sunday, the University of Evansville women's tennis team fell by a final of 6-1 at Western Kentucky on Friday.
Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga picked up the point for the Purple Aces, battling to the finish in the sixth flight. She defeated Lisa Friess in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Chieko Yamada went three sets at top singles, but Elpida Malamou held on for the win, 4-6, 6-3, 10-2.
"This wasn't quite the performance we were going for coming off last weekend, but you have to give credit to Coach Berhane and Western Kentucky's players. They adjusted to the windy conditions better than we did and found a way to make shots that we just didn't match," Aces head coach Jayson Wiseman said. "I thought that Chieko payed a really fantastic match. The young lady she paid beat her 6-1, 6-0 last time they played, but today it was a terrific battle. Andrea also played a really great match as well. She really hit the ball well from start RI finish and showed a ton of mental toughness to come back and take that match."
Evansville looks to open MVC action with a positive result on Sunday as they take on Wichita State at 9 a.m. at Wesselman Park.
