Aces drop midweek contest in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After taking a two-run lead in the opening frame, the University of Evansville baseball team fell victim to a comeback by Indiana on Tuesday evening, falling in 6-3 fashion to the Hoosiers at Bart Kaufman Field.

Things couldn't have started better for the Aces (8-16) as Korbin Williams and Trey Hair led off the game with back-to-back doubles, and a Kenton Crews single plated another to double the advantage.

Hits from Logan Sowers and Tony Butler canceled out the lead an inning later as the Hoosiers (14-8-1) pushed across three runs in the second to take hold.

Butler finished 3-for-3 with four RBI on the day, and Sowers was 2-for-4 with three scores.

Weigand earned the start for the Aces on the mound, allowing six runs (four earned) over a season-best six innings. The Bourbonnais, Ill., native dropped to 1-3 this season.

"Alex gave us six innings, which is important when you have double-midweek," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "In the innings that he was able to put up goose-eggs, he showcased two off-speed pitches, which he hadn't been able to do yet this season. Tonight, he was able to locate those pitches at times, which helped keep the game close."

After the Hoosiers scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, the Aces cut the deficit with a Williams run-scoring double, but that would be all UE could muster as the tying run was stranded on second.

"We didn't do a good enough job with runners in scoring position tonight," Carroll said. "Look at the ratio. We had nine hits and scored three runs, and they had seven but scored six. They were able to get the hits when they needed, but we stranded eight. As an offense we didn't take care of business tonight."

Williams led the way for the Aces, finishing with three hits for the second straight game, and both Crews and Craig Shepherd ended 2-for-4.

Butler and Sowers would combine one more time to account for the game's final score.

UE will return to action on Wednesday as the team will return home to close out the pre-conference slate against SIUE. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
