EVANSVILLE – It's been quite a year for Reitz Memorial High School standout and University of Evansville signee Sam Bonano.
 
Following a run to yet another state championship in the fall, the All-American committed his future to UE, and Thursday evening, he picked up yet another accolade as he was named the Boys' Soccer Player of the Year at the Indiana Sports Awards, which were held at Clowes Memorial Hall in Indianapolis.
 
'This is a great honor for Sam and our community," UE head coach Marshall Ray said. "He is a coach's player and gives everything he has for the team. This award is a reflection of the hard work that he has put in for himself, Memorial and Coach Bill Vieth. I have no doubt that he will put that same effort and commitment into our program in the coming years."
 
Bonano, the latest in a long line of local products to continue their playing career with the Purple Aces, experienced an incredible senior year for Memorial, scoring 31 goals and dishing out 25 assists on the way to earning Metro Player of the Year honors.
 
Bonano is one of two All-Americans that are set to join the Aces, as Adam Snow will also join the team from Union, Ky. Both players, as well as the rest of UE's signing class, will play a key role in helping the Aces build off a successful 2016 campaign that featured the second-largest turnaround in school history and a trip to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament semifinals.
 
UE, which wrapped up its 2017 spring season earlier this month, will return to the pitch at Arad McCutchan Stadium in the fall.
