Aces fall in midweek contest with Belmont

EVANSVILLE – Andrew Tanous and Kenton Crews each enjoyed career outings at the plate on Tuesday night, but their efforts would largely go for naught as the University of Evansville baseball team dropped a 16-9 decision to visiting Belmont at Charles H. Braun Stadium.

Tanous was 4-for-4 on the day with a pair of runs batted in, and Kenton Crews collected two doubles and a home run as UE fell to 16-35 on the season.

Belmont improved to 27-25 and secured a season sweep of the Aces, previously winning in 3-0 fashion at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville.

Belmont fired the opening salvo with a Nick Egli run-scoring single in the first, but the Aces leveled the affair with Tanous' first hit in the bottom half of the inning. Rafael Bournigal grabbed the lead back with a two-run single an inning later before Crews' three-run blast handed the Aces their first and only lead of the game.

Belmont brought about another lead change in the third with an Egli homer and Kyle Conger run-scoring triple, but the Aces would once again even things up in the ensuing frame as Crews picked up yet another RBI on a double down the left field line.

The Bruins grabbed the lead for good in the fifth on a Matt Cogen single, and they'd go on to score one more in the sixth, two in the seventh, four in the eighth and three in the ninth.

Belmont was led on the day by Bournigal, who was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Meanwhile, Logan Jarvis, who came in as a pinch hitter, was 1-for-2 with a three RBI. Cogen and Conger also enjoyed three-hit performances, and Hunter Holland ended 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and three scores.

UE briefly challenged the lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to four at 13-9 before a timely double play got the Bruins out of a bases-loaded jam with one out.

UE will return to Braun Stadium later this week with a three-game set against Dallas Baptist, which will mark the final three games of the regular season for both teams. The series will begin on Thursday at 6 p.m.
