DENVER – It was a game for the ages on Sunday afternoon as former University of Evansville pitcher Kyle Freeland came within two outs of throwing a no-hitter in his rookie season with the Colorado Rockies.

Freeland, who was facing the Chicago White Sox on Sunday at Coors Field, got the first out in the ninth inning before Melky Cabrera singled to left field to break up the no-hit bid.  Freeland exited the game to a thunderous applause from his home town.  He went 8 1/3 innings on Sunday, allowing one hit on the way to his 9th win of the season.  Freeland threw 126 pitches in the game.

"Around the fifth or sixth inning was when I realized I was really settling into my groove," Freeland said after the game. "I'm throwing well, my team's playing well, we've got a lead. Just go out there, pitch to contact, get quick outs and get back in."

Rockies manager Bud Black commented on Freeland's performance.

"He pitched inside extremely well, both in off the plate and for strikes," said Black.  "His slider/cutter was much better than it's been the last four starts. The fastball away had great action."

In the postgame, Freeland explained that he threw one no-hitter in his career.  That came during his high school days in Denver against George Washington High School.  His squad - Thomas Jefferson High School - run-ruled them by 10 as he went five frames in the no-hit effort.
