UE Baseball set to open season in Spartanburg this weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind - With plenty of new faces in new places, as well as cagey veterans set to take over leadership roles, the University of Evansville baseball team is set to open the 2018 campaign in Spartanburg, S.C. at a tournament hosted by both Wofford College and the University of South Carolina Upstate.

The tournament begins Friday at Wofford's Russell King Field, where the Purple Aces will take on Fordham (Bronx, NY) at 11 a.m. Central Time. The Rams, who finished 27-24 last season, were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 Conference preseason poll.

On Saturday, the Aces square off against Dayton, also from the Atlantic 10 back at King Field. The Flyers, who were selected to finish eleventh in the conference, finished 20-35 in 2017. They game is set for an 11 a.m. Central Time first pitch.

And finally on Sunday, UE will get a great early season measuring stick, as they go up against nationally ranked Kentucky at USC Upstate at 10 a.m. Central Time. The Wildcats are currently ranked #8 in every major poll, have three All-Southeastern Conference team honorees in juniors Sean Hejelle, Tristan Pompey and senior Luke Becker were named to preseason All-Southeastern Conference teams. Hjelle is the reigning SEC Pitcher of the Year. UK is picked to finish second in the SEC East, just behind favorite, Florida.
