ATLANTA, Ga. - It was a tough day in Atlanta for the University of Evansville baseball team, as they suffered a heartbreaking extra inning loss to Kennesaw State, 7-6 in 12 innings, in their series opener with the Owls Friday.
Trailing for much of the game, the Aces(1-3) were down to their final out, down 5-3, when sophomore center fielder Kenton Crews came to the plate with two aboard. Crews proceeded to drill a 3-run home run off Kennesaw State reliever Deviner McCray. And with one swing of the stick, Evansville had taken the lead, 6-5.
The Aces sent out closer Adam Lukas to close out the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the Owls(2-5) had other ideas. Chabut opened the inning with a single to right. Then, an error on a pick-off attempt allowed David Chabut to move up to second. Lukas proceeded to walk Grant Williams. Then, after a sacrifice fly moved the runners to second and third, Lukas intentionally walked Helms to load up the bases. Jake Franklin hit a sent a sac-fly to deep left, allowing Chabut to score with the equalizer. Lukas would prevent any more damage, sending the game to extra innings.
That's the way it would stay until the 12th, when Franklin delivered his second big hit of the night, stroking a one-out triple to left off senior Evansville reliever Dylan Horstmeier. The very next batter, A.J. Willoughtby sent a single through the left side of the infield, bringing in Franklin with the game-winner.
Junior right-hander Austin Allinger got the start on the mound for UE, going 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits, walking four while striking out three.
"It was a tough extra innings loss for our club today," said University of Evansville Head Coach Wes Carroll. "We didn't get a quality start on the mound, but our bats picked us up and gave us a chance with the Crews blast. We showed fight, but didn't close it out."
The Aces will look to get back in the win column tomorrow when they play a doubleheader against Kennesaw State. First pitch from Stillwell Baseball Stadium is at 12 pm central time.
