EVANSVILLE – Professional soccer will return to Evansville on March 10 as the University of Evansville and Arad McCutchan Stadium will play host to an exhibition match between Louisville City FC and Saint Louis FC. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
The match, which will serve as the final preseason friendlies for each team, will be the third professional contest in the history of the stadium. Last season, nearly 1,000 people came to campus as Louisville City battled Indy Eleven to a 1-1 draw.
Louisville City enjoyed its most successful season in club history in 2017 as LCFC captured its first USL Cup with a 1-0 victory over Swope Park Rangers. LCFC finished the 2017 campaign with an 18-6-8 record and returns USL Cup MVP, Paolo DelPiccolo, for the 2018 campaign.
Saint Louis enters 2018 after a 2017 season that saw SLFC finish 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 9-14-9 record and 36 points on the year, just eight points shy of earning a playoff berth. Looking ahead to 2018, the offensive potential has been on display during the preseason as Saint Louis has amassed 16 goals in three preseason matches so far.
The two sides met twice a season ago with LCFC and SLFC battling to a scoreless draw in the season-opener and Louisville City earning a 4-1 victory over Saint Louis later in the season on July 22.
With USL realignment prior to the 2018 league season, Saint Louis made the move to the Western Conference while Louisville City remained in the Eastern Conference meaning the two rivals lone scheduled meeting this year will take place at Arad McCutchan Stadium on March 10.
Louisville City and Saint Louis are two of the best-supported teams in the USL as each draw in better than 4,500 fans per game.
"We have enjoyed bringing professional soccer to our community the last two springs and are thankful we have the opportunity to do so again this year," said Ray. "It should prove to be a great match again as this will be the last preseason match for both teams before they kick off their regular season the following weekend. There is an added dimension this year as these two teams are rivals but due to conference realignment, this will be their only meeting in 2018. They both have great supporter groups so I am sure it will be a lively atmosphere at the match. We look forward to seeing our soccer community out to support the match."
Both teams will be bringing merchandise for purchase, and tickets to the event will cost $5.
