Aces softball splits opening day

LAFAYETTE, La. – Opening day was a successful one for the University of Evansville softball team as the Purple Aces earned a 14-6 win over Samford to start the day before dropping a 7-1 decision to #22 Louisiana on Friday in the Mardi Gras Classic.

"We saw a lot of positive things today that we can build on," head coach Mat Mundell said when the day was complete.  "I loved the way our pitchers competed. We got a ton of ground balls. If we pitched like we did today all season it's going to be a lot of fun.  Our offense has a chance to do some great things too."

UE's season got off to a nice start with a 14-6 win over Samford at Rebels Park in Teurlings, La.  Senior Brittany Hay went 2-3 with three RBI and three runs scores to lead the Aces.  She was one of five to hit home runs as Lindsay Renneisen, Eryn Gould, Alex Latoria and Bailee Porter also homered in the game.

Porter, Gould and Elyse Hickey tied Hay for the team-high with three runs batted in.  Ashleigh Downing made the start, giving up three earned runs in 4 2/3 frames her way to the win.  Jaime Nurrenbern went 2 1/3 innings of relief.  She gave up three unearned runs.  Samford was led by Madison Couch, who was 2-4 with three RBIs.

Renneisen led the game off with a home run before the Aces added four more in the third.  Gould recorded the first home run of her college career before Hickey hit a base-clearing double to make it a 5-0 game.  A 3-run homer by Brittany Hay extended the lead to 8-0 in the fourth before Evansville added two runs in the 5th, three in the 6th and one more in the 7th to take the 14-6 win.  Samford outhit the Aces, 13-11, but UE got the job done with the long ball as five homers accounted for nine of the 14 runs.

Louisiana, who went 47-8 in 2017 and is currently ranked in the top 25, picked up a 7-1 win over UE in the nightcap.  The Ragin Cajuns scored a single run in the first three innings before the Aces got on the board in the fourth.

Hay was the difference once again, hitting a single to right to plate Eryn Gould.  That would be the lone run for UE as Louisiana took the win.  Jolie Readeaux went a perfect 3-3 from the plate to lead the Ragin Cajuns to the victory.  Summer Ellyson picked up the win for ULL, going the distance while giving up one run on three hits.  UE started Emily Lockhart allowed five runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 frames of work before Downing tossed 2 2/3 and allowed two runs, one earned.

Two more games are on tap tomorrow when the Aces take on UIC and Iowa.  At 11:30 a.m., UE faces the defending Horizon League Champion Flames before taking on the Big Ten's Hawkeyes in a 7 p.m. contest.  The tournament wraps up on Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest versus Eastern Illinois.
