ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - On the opening day of the Lonnie Barton Invitational, the University of Evansville women's golf team recorded a team-score of 330 to put the Purple Aces in sixth place after the first round at the LPGA Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla.
The Aces' opening-round 330 placed Evansville sixth in the 13-team field and just six strokes off third place Sacred Heart and Bethune-Cookman. Leading the tournament after the opening day is Fairleigh Dickinson, who shot 311 as a team to give the Knights a three-shot lead over second place North Carolina A&T.
A junior and a freshman led the way for the Aces in the first round as Madison Chaney and Sophia Rohleder each carded 79s, placing the Evansville duo in a tie for 12th. Following Chaney and Rohleder was Minka Gill who opened the invitational with a first-round 84. Gill's 84 put her in a tie for 29th in the 71 golfer field.
Day One Results
Finishing the day in a tie for 42nd, Giulia Mallman recorded an 88 in the first round. Just five strokes back of Mallman is sophomore Lexie Sollman who carded an opening-round 93.
Evansville along with the 12 other teams in the field will complete the tournament on the second day of competition on Tuesday at the LPGA Country Club.
