NORMAL, Ill. - Facing stiff competition, the University of Evansville men's golf team sits in a tie for eighth following the opening day of action at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill.
The Purple Aces opened the tournament with a consistent first day, carding a team score of 615 (307 - 308) after the first two rounds of competition. Duke leads the intercollegiate with a two-round team score of 587 (303 - 284), giving the Blue Devils an 11-stroke advantage over second-place Illinois State.
Spencer Wagner and Tyler Gray led the way for Evansville, both opening the intercollegiate sitting in a tie for 16th at nine-over after the first two rounds. Wagner recorded a 74 in Saturday morning's first round before wrapping-up the opening day with a 77, while Gray tallied an 80 in the opening round before responding with a one-under 71 to close out the first day.
Following Gray and Wagner is Matthew Ladd, who currently sits in a tie for 31st, Ladd opened the intercollegiate with a 74 in the firs round before finishing the day with a 79 in the second round for a first-day total of 153.
In a tie for 75th after the opening pair of rounds, Noah Reese totaled a 162 (79 - 83) on the first day of competition, while Cameron Weyer concluded the first day in a tie for 79th with an 82 and 81 in the first two rounds.
Evansville closes out the D.A.Weibring Intercollegiate with a 9:45 a.m. start in the third and final round of comeptition on Sunday morning.
