History Of The University

The University of Evansville celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2004, 150 years after Moores Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institute was founded in the little town of Moores Hill in southeastern Indiana.

The first college building at Moores Hill was completed on December 1, 1856, although the opening day of classes for the new college was held in the building on September 9 of that year.

A cornerstone was laid for a second building over 50 years later on June 12, 1907. The new building was dedicated on June 18, 1908, and named "Carnegie Hall" after the chief donor, Andrew Carnegie.

During its existence at Moores Hill from 1858 to 1917, the College graduated 487 students.

On March 21, 1917, George S. Clifford made a presentation at a special session of the Indiana Conference of the Methodist Church proposing to move the college to Evansville, Indiana. Clifford had prepared a map showing that if a circle with a 50-mile radius was drawn around each of the colleges within the state, none touched Evansville. After deliberation, the school was relocated to Evansville in 1919 and renamed Evansville College. In 1967, after continued growth and organizational changes, the name was changed to the University of Evansville with the approval of the Indiana State Legislature.

The University of Evansville is an independent, United Methodist Church affiliated university, and holds a strong position in character and quality among institutions of higher education throughout the nation. With five colleges and schools, including a campus at Harlaxton College in England, the University provides outstanding educational opportunities in the liberal arts and sciences as well as in selected professions. The University offers more than 80 academic areas and a full range of degree programs, including bachelor's and master's degrees, two-year associate degrees, certification programs and continuing education classes. Approximately 2,979 full-time and part-time students in credit programs from over 45 states and 49 foreign countries study on its beautiful 80-acre campus.

Metropolitan Evansville is located on the banks of the Ohio River in southwestern Indiana. The city of about 135,000 residents serves as the cultural, industrial and retail center for the Tri-State region encompassing southern Illinois, western Kentucky and southern Indiana. Because of its central location, Evansville is a comfortable drive from Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Louisville, Nashville and St. Louis.
