Three Evansville Sports Honored By NCAA

6/15/2012 11:15:00 AM

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville had three sports honored by the NCAA for earning Public Recognition Awards based on their multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR).

Included in the NCAA’s recognition were the Purple Aces women’s basketball team, the women’s cross country squad and UE’s women’s golf team.  All were honored for their efforts during the 2010-11 season.

This marks the fourth year in a row that the women’s basketball team has been honored.  The women posted a cumulative GPA of 3.264 during that span.  For women’s cross country and women’s golf, it marked the third year in a row that each received the honor.  Cross country put forth a 3.606 GPA while golf’s was a 3.474.

Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete receiving any athletic scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
