Men’s Soccer drops 2-1 decision to Lipscomb

EVANSVILLE – A pair of first half goals proved too much to overcome for the University of Evansville men's soccer team on Tuesday night as the Purple Aces fell 2-1 to visiting Lipscomb at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

"It was a game of two halves," UE head coach Marshall Ray said. "We gave up another early goal, and you can't do that and rebound every game. As a group we have to do better than we did in the first half. The second half was better, and it's not like we changed the players. We had a little more energy."

The Aces (8-7-2) saw their three-match unbeaten run snapped in the contest as LU (9-5-1) extended its own streak out to four consecutive wins.

The Bisons got on the board early with a sixth minute strike as Logan Paynter found the back of the net off a corner kick. The visitors from Nashville doubled their advantage just 99 seconds before the break as a foul in the box led to a Malik Shaheed penalty kick.

The second half was noticeably stronger for the Aces, but UE couldn't get on the board until the 86th minute. Following a Zac Blaydes corner, Trevor Baum's header fell to the feet of Jesse Stafford Lacey on the edge of the box, and he found the corner of the net for his first career goal.

"I thought Jesse had a good game," Ray said. "He's played in a lot of different spots for us this year. I can't say enough about how hard he works and battles."

The Aces, who have two matches left in the regular season, will return to action with a conference showdown with Missouri State on Saturday.

NOTES: UE is 3-3-2 all-time against Lipscomb … The two sides have met in each of the past four seasons, with the Bisons coming away victorious in each of the past two … Last season, UE dropped a 4-2 decision in Nashville … The last win for UE was in 1-0 fashion in 2013 … The Aces are 29-13-3 all-time against opponents from the state of Tennessee and 21-10-2 against Nashville schools … Since 1979, UE is 7-5-0 on Oct. 25 … The Aces had  won each of the previous five matches played on the date, a streak that stretched back to a 4-3 win over Drake in 1998.
