DENVER, Colo.--Former University of Evansville standout Jamey Carroll capped the longest one-game tiebreaker in Major League Baseball history Monday night with a game-winning sacrifice fly in the 13th inning to send the surging Colorado Rockies into the National League Division Series with a 9-8 extra-inning victory over the San Diego Padres at Coors Field in Denver.
Carroll capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the 13th inning against San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman with a line-drive sacrifice fly to Brian Giles in right field. Matt Holliday was able to scamper home and just beat the throw of Giles to home plate with a head-first slide to give the Rockies a 9-8 victory and send Colorado to its first playoff appearance since 1995.
“I was just trying to get a ball up in the zone,” Carroll told reporters after the game. “Had a guy at third. Matty did a great job. Matty ran his butt off. I am so happy that we get this opportunity to go on.”
Carroll, who entered the game as a pinch-runner in the seventh inning, finished the game going 1-for-2 with an RBI. Carroll and the Rockies will now advance on to the National League Division Series against the NL East Division champion Philadelphia Phillies. The series will begin on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. central time at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. The trip to the playoffs is the second in team history for the Rockies, and the first for Carroll in his six-year Major League career.
