EVANSVILLE, Ind.--Speedy University of Evansville junior forward Kayla Lambert outran UAB's defense for three goals Friday night, posting the third hat trick of her career in the Aces' 3-0 soccer victory over the Blazers at Black Beauty Field. UE is now 8-0-1 in its last nine home matches, dating back to last October.
Evansville is 6-2-1 overall going into Sunday's match at IUPUI. UAB is 4-4-1 after giving up as many as three goals in the same match for the first time this season.
"It was just a great soccer game," said UE coach Chris Pfau. "Both teams played exceptionally well, and it was great to see the fight and energy that we showed tonight. I thought (midfielder) Heidi Grey did a very good job of generating our attack."
Lambert came off the bench in the 32nd minute and promptly scored her fifth goal of the season at 39:57, taking a ball that Julie Winkler thread through the middle of UAB's defense. Lambert took the ball in stride and beat Blazer goalkeeper Kate Blankenship to the keeper's left for the easy goal. The second tally came at 49:49 when Heidi Grey and Sara Ornelas freed up a ball to Lambert down the left side. She outraced the defenders and then found just enough of an angle to tuck the shot past the near post to give Evansville a 2-0 advantage. Lambert's first hat trick since her freshman year followed at 85:00 when defender Katelyn Smith controlled the ball in the offensive end and fed it to Lambert near the 18. She went left and took a shot that hit the far post and then bounced into the goal. Lambert now has 34 goals and 20 assists for 88 career points. She ranks third at UE in both caree goals and career points.
Defensively, Evansville limited UAB to a total of 11 shots, and freshman keeper Theresa Bagby controlled all four shots that came on goal.
