Norton's Navy Sinks Bacsu's Bashers In Game One Of Fall World Series

10/5/2007 10:44:36 PM

EVANSVILLE, Ind.--Led by the right arm of junior John Foley and a balanced offensive attack that saw five players register two-hit games, Norton’s Navy breezed past Bacsu’s Bashers, 10-4, in Game One of the 2007 UE Fall World Series at Charles H. Braun Stadium.  Foley threw four innings, allowing two unearned runs on one hit, registering three strikeouts in the process.  The loss went to sophomore RHP Wade Kapteyn, who was roughed up for six runs on seven hits in 1.2 IP.

Norton’s Navy wasted no time getting on the board when freshman Nate Smith knocked in junior Andy Smith with a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning.  Bacsu’s Bashers answered back in the top of the second with two unearned runs, but the lead would be short-lived.

With one run in and a runner on second base in the bottom of the second, Norton’s Navy strung together five straight two-out hits to stretch the lead to 7-2.  After consecutive singles by sophomore Shawn Kuester, Andy Smith, and senior Jim Viscomi chased Kapteyn from the game, Nate Smith greeted freshman reliever Curtis Hudson with a ringing two-run triple to left-center, before a single by junior Tom Freeman completed the scoring for the inning.  Norton’s Navy would tack on three more runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single from junior Andrew Gher and a two-RBI double from sophomore Alex Acheson.

Kuester, Andy Smith, Nate Smith, Freeman and Gher notched multi-hit games, while freshman Brian Robinson reached base in all three plate appearances (two walks, one HBP).  Nate Smith and Acheson led Norton’s Navy with three RBI apiece.  Sophomore infielders Adam Akin and Ty Legan each recorded doubles, while freshman TJ Dailey scored two runs for Bacsu’s Bashers.

Teams are named in honor of former UE standouts Kirk Bacsu and Ben Norton, who are serving as student assistant coaches this fall, after returning from stints playing in the minor league systems of the Philadelphia Phillies and Kansas City Royals, respectively.  The Fall World Series will continue on Saturday at 4pm at Braun Stadium.  Bacsu will be calling upon freshman RHP Zach Taylor to pitch his team even in the series.  Taylor will be opposed by freshman RHP Dan Holcomb.
