EVANSVILLE, Ind.--Evansville is taking full advantage of its early-season home matches in women's soccer. The Purple Aces improved their home turf record to 2-0-1 and their overall record to 4-1-1 with a 1-0 victory Friday night over DePaul University at Black Beauty Field.
Friday's victory extended Evansville's home field unbeaten streak to seven matches, dating back to last October. The Aces finish their four-match homestand Tuesday at 6:00 CDT against Murray State.
UE scored at 40:32 when Kaitlynn Radtke and Mia Tofano pushed the ball upfield to freshman Sara Ornelas, who broke behind DePaul's defense and scored her first collegiate goal from eight yards away on the right side.
UE dominated most of the match, outshooting the Blue Demons 13-7 and putting six shots on goal compared to three by DePaul. Jessica Sumner picked up her first shutout of the season while picking up three saves, and had plenty of help from her four defenders--Nicole Zygmontowicz, Kara Murphy, Kasey Kutzler and Katelyn Smith.
"Defensively, we played well," according to Coach Chris Pfau. "We are beginning to get focused defensively. We're starting to play together as a unit, and I thought Jessica controlled the box and came out well."
