EVANSVILLE, Ind.--Four games in 11 days took their toll on the University of Evansville women's soccer team Tuesday night, but the Aces still found enough energy to prevail with a 2-1 victory over Murray State at UE's Black Beauty Field.
Junior forward Kayla Lambert accounted for both goals to give Evansville a 2-0 halftime lead. Lambert, who scored 17 goals as a freshman and 10 as a sophomore, now has four goals this season, three in the last eight days. Evansville improved to 5-1-1 on the year with Tuesday's win, and extended its unbeaten streak at Black Beauty Field to eight matches dating back to last October.
Lambert scored at 10:15 on assists from Heidi Grey and Mia Tofano, and at 21:37 thanks to a cross from defender Nicole Zygmontowicz.
But the 3-4-0 Racers never gave up, and they made it a one-goal match at 67:29 when Jen Peios made a long cross into the box that found Rebekah Clay, who nailed a hard shot from near the goal to make it 2-1. Murray State outshot Evansville 8-4 in the second half and 17-9 overall, but Evansville held off the Racers late in the match. UE has allowed only two goals in the last four matches.
Jessica Sumner played the first half in goal for UE and made four saves. Theresa Bagby played the second half, giving up the one goal and also making four saves.
Tuesday's match ended a four-match homestand for Evansville. The Aces play again Sunday at Indiana University at 1:00 CDT.
