EVANSVILLE, Ind.--Evansville scored first, but St. Louis took control soon afterward Monday evening in the Billikens' 6-1 women's soccer exhibition victory at the University of Evansville's Black Beauty Field.
Both teams used their entire squad of available players in the match that consisted of three 35-minute periods.
Junior forward Mia Tofano put the Purple Aces ahead 1-0 just 1:55 into the match when Nicole Moyen found her with a pass 20 yards from the goal. Tofano broke through the St. Louis defense and scored easily past SLU keeper Hannah Koesterer.
The Billikens stormed back with five goals in the opening period, with two from Kelly Waeckerle (at 29:37 and 32:42) and Alyssa Mautz (21:05 and 34:55), and one from Mary Green (11:31). St. Louis forward Cassi Winchell added the final goal, in the third period.
The Billikens finished with 21 shots, 13 on goal. Evansville took five shots, two on goal.
"Our fitness level needs to improve, and we gave up too many soft goals," said Head Coach Chris Pfau. "I'm not too worried about our fitness because we have 10 days before the regular season begins. We just need to play more than we have in the last week.
"The first 10 to 15 minutes showed what we can do when we're game-fit. We played very well at the start."
