Aces, Valpo Tie 1-1

8/26/2007 3:30:57 PM

EVANSVILLE, Ind.--Both goals came within a three-minute span Sunday afternoon as the University of Evansville Purple Aces and Valparaiso University Crusaders played to a 1-1 women's soccer tie in an exhibition match at UE's Black Beauty Field.

Valpo struck first at 51:34 when Jackie Kondratko sent in a pass that found a leaping Lori Johnson, who headed the shot over the top of Evansville goalkeeper Jessia Sumner.  The Aces tied the match at 54:09 thanks to a penalty kick.  UE's Kayla Lambert got behind Valparaiso's defense with the ball, and was tripped in the penalty box by goalkeeper Mele Cabral.  Rocky Hearst took the PK for Evansville, and scored with a low line drive to the left of Cabral.

Evansville finished with nine shots, four on goal, while Valpo had six and three.  The Crusaders had four of the match's five corner kicks. The match was stopped at the end of regulation play.

"It was a good effort for us," said Evansville coach Chris Pfau.  "We finished off strong, and we started linking up better, which is always one of the last things that come together in pre-season.  And we're probably deeper than we've ever been.  It was a good match to get us ready for the season opener."

The Aces play for real Friday against Austin Peay in the first round of the Wright State Classic at Dayton, Ohio.
