Women's Soccer Beats Austin Peay, 2-1

8/31/2007 4:23:59 PM

DAYTON, Ohio -- The University of Evansville women's soccer team came from behind to beat Austin Peay 2-1 this evening in the opening round of the Wright State Tournament. It was the first match of the season for both teams.

The Aces will try for their second straight victory Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Jacksonville State.

Austin Peay opened the scoring at 15:50 when Ashley Beck scored from 10 yards away against Evansville goalkeeper Theresa Bagby.  But the Aces tied it up at 33:32 when junior forward Mia Tofano took a pass from Rocky Hearst and beat the Governors' defense down the middle for a 10-yard shot against APSU goalkeeper Michelle Smith.

The game-winner came at 56:08 when Heidi Grey scored from 16 yards away, taking advantage of a deflected shot by teammate Danielle Brand and blasting it past Smith in goal.

"Our bench was great in the first half," remarked coach Chris Pfau. "We had five players come off the bench in the first half and the level picked up with them.  Our defense played well, too.  We limited Austin Peay to five shots, only two in the second half. If we can limit teams to fewer than 10 shots, we'll win a lot of games."
