Kentucky Hands UE Its First Loss

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Nicole Moyen's 30-yard blast gave Evansville a 1-1 tie early in the match, but the University of Kentucky scored the final three goals to beat the Purple Aces 4-1 in women's soccer here Wednesday night.  Kentucky, ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region poll, is now 2-0-1.  UE is 2-1-0 going into Friday's home opener against Western Illinois at 5:00.

Callie Lanphier gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 7:52 before Moyen's long shot past UK goalkeeper Laura Baker and into the upper corner of the net tied the match at 1-1 at 11:43.  It was Moyen's first goal of the season, and the fourth of the junior midfielder's career.  Cindy Abbott put Kentucky up 2-1 at 40:49, and UK made it 3-1 in the first minute of the second half on Laura Novikoff's goal.  Alicia Browning added the final goal, at 77:25.

Kentucky finished with 15 shots, seven on goal.  Evansville was limited to five shots, three on goal.  Freshman Theresa Bagby played all 90 minutes in goal for the Aces, and made three saves.  Baker made two saves for Kentucky.

"Our strength is going forward and scoring goals, but against good teams like Kentucky, we have to think about defense first," said UE coach Chris Pfau.  "They exposed us on counter attacks, and that put way too much pressure on our defenders.  It was a good lesson for us, competing against a team that plays at a high level.  Good teams win 1-0, and that's what we need to start doing more of instead of expecting to win 3-2 and 4-3."
