It's been tough for Southern Illinois to find the shooting range this season. After Tuesday night's game, the Salukis might want to play at Evansville's Roberts Stadium all the time.
The Salukis hit five three-pointers in the first 15 minutes and made one old-fashion three-pointer to take 15-0 and 22-2 leads over Evansville. That lead was much too big for the Aces to overcome as Southern Illinois improved to 8-9 on the season and 3-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference with an 80-67 win. The win also ended SIU's two-game losing streak to UE at Roberts Stadium. Evansville is now 5-11 overall and 0-6 in the MVC going into Saturday night's game at Bradley.
Southern Illinois ended up shooting 59 percent overall and hit nine of 17 three-point attempts while Evansville shot 49 percent and hit four of eight three-pointers. Randal Falker led SIU's balanced attack with 16 points, while Bryan Mullins and Wesley Clemmons added 14 each. Shy Ely of Evansville came through with his second straight 20-plus game, scoring 21 on Tuesday after scoring a career-high 28 last Saturday at Illinois State. Freshman center Pieter van Tongeren added a career-high 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field.
