The Cleveland Indians have exercised their option on utility infielder and former University of Evansville All-American Jamey Carroll for the 2009 season.
Carroll, acquired from Colorado this past December in an off-season trade, hit .277 and played in 113 games for the Indians this year. Carroll knocked 13 doubles, four triples, a home run, scored 60 runs and drove in 36 in his first year in the American League. He is a career .273 hitter in seven major league seasons for the Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies, and Cleveland Indians.
Carroll excelled on the diamond at UE from 1994-96, earning all-Missouri Valley Conference, all-region, and All-America honors at shortstop in 1996. Carroll currently ranks among UE’s career leaders in batting average (4th-.348), hits (9th-236), runs scored (9th-150), triples (6th-12), and stolen bases (5th-68). He was inducted into UE’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005, and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference’s All-Centennial Team in 2007. Jamey Carroll is the older brother of current UE baseball head coach Wes Carroll.
