FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On the first day of competition, Kate Chybowski and Payal Sharma both locked up singles flight championships at the Mastodon Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind. Ashton Schwerin also went 2-0 on Saturday and will play for her flight championship on Sunday.
As a team, the Aces went 9-5 in singles action on Saturday at the Kachmann Tennis Center on the IPFW campus. Playing in a round-robin format against opponents from IPFW, Detroit, Valparaiso and Youngstown State, three other UE players will have a shot at a flight championship on Sunday. In addition to Chybowski, Sharma and Schwerin, UE’s Theadora Kotsiou, Pin Sorensen and Allie Cox have an opportunity at leaving the Mastodon Invitational with a singles crown.
Just as she did last weekend in the Aces Fall Classic, Chybowski made quick work of her Flight 1 opponents, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Amy Recht of IPFW and 6-3, 6-1 over Annie Moore of Detroit. After dropping her first set of play, Sharma battled back to top Valparaiso’s Jackie O’Reilly 10-8 in a third set tiebreaker and then cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kelly Culbertson of YSU to secure the Flight 9 championship.
Schwerin also stood strong in her Flight 3 matches, winning 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) against VU’s Molly Keifer and dominating her second match over Ingrid Ballus of IPFW, 6-1, 6-2.
The final day of competition at the Mastodon Invitational will begin on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT. Play will consist of three rounds of doubles and the final stage of singles round-robin action.
