The University of Evansville baseball team will kick off a five-game homestand on Tuesday, as the Purple Aces will host the Brescia University Bearcats at 6:00 p.m. at UE’s Charles H. Braun Stadium.
The UE-Brescia contest will kick off a busy week of action at Braun Stadium, as UE will also welcome Southeast Missouri State to town on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. contest, before hosting Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday.
Evansville will be out to try and snap a six-game losing streak on Tuesday night, as the Purple Aces will bring a 2-21 overall record into the contest. Junior infielder Andy Smith (Evansville, Ind./North) continues to pace the UE attack with a .393 batting average, which ranks as the fifth-best average in the MVC so far this year. Rookie outfielder Greg Wallace (Nanaimo, B.C./Dover Bay S.S.) and junior first baseman Derek Melton (Trenton, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) also currently sport batting averages above .300 this year at .306 and .301, respectively.
Brescia, meanwhile, will ride a five-game winning streak into Tuesday’s game after sweeping a four- game conference series from Alice Lloyd College over the weekend. The NAIA Bearcats are currently 11-18 overall and are paced by an offense which has hit .328 so far this year. Senior two-way player Brett Hunt leads the potent Brescia attack with a .432 average, 10 home runs, and 38 RBI. Hunt is also expected to get the start on the mound for the Bearcats on Tuesday, where he is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA so far this year.
Evansville leads the all-time series over Brescia, 1-0, having knocked off the Bearcats by a score of 9-4 on February 22, 2005.
