EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Freshman lead-off man Greg Wallace and sophomore outfielder Alex Acheson combined for seven hits at the top of the University of Evansville batting order on Tuesday night to ignite the Purple Aces to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Brescia University Bearcats at UE’s Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.
Wallace went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored at the top of the UE batting order, while Acheson posted his second four-hit contest of the year to go along with a career-best four RBI in the second spot in the UE batting order to help the Purple Aces knock off the visiting Bearcats.
Acheson got UE’s offense started in the second inning, as he knocked a two-run single through the hole on the left-side of the Brescia infield with the bases loaded to give UE a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats would trim the deficit to 2-1 with an unearned run in the third inning, but that would be as close as Brescia would get as UE would answer back with a run of its own in the fourth inning on a lead-off single by sophomore outfielder Jared Baehl and back-to-back doubles by Wallace and Acheson.
The Purple Aces would expand the lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Acheson and a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Andy Smith, before tacking on the sixth and final run in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded RBI single by sophomore Andy Pascoe.
The six runs of support would be more than enough for freshman right-hander Zach Taylor (1-3), who earned his first collegiate victory by scattering an unearned run on three base hits and three walks in 7.0 innings of work. Taylor struck out five.
“Greg and Alex really did a great job of making things happen at the top of the batting order for us tonight,” said UE head coach David Seifert. “Anytime that you can get seven hits out of the top two men in your order, you are putting yourself into a good position to score some runs and win a ballgame.
“I also thought that Jared Baehl did a nice job at the bottom of the order getting on base ahead of Greg and Alex. He had three hits tonight and scored two runs because of it, and we need that type of production up and down our lineup to be successful. It was nice to see six different guys collect hits tonight.”
Acheson led UE’s 13-hit attack with four hits, a double, and four RBI, while Wallace and Baehl each had three hits as well. Shortstop Kelley Jordan went 2-for-3 with a run scored to power the Brescia (11-19) attack.
Evansville (3-21) will return to Braun Stadium again on Wednesday night, as the Purple Aces will host the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks. First-pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
